Elvis Presley thought he was giving Priscilla something meaningful—an escape from the loneliness of Graceland and a purpose beyond being “Elvis Presley’s wife.” He encouraged her to study karate and introduced her to Mike Stone, a respected champion whom Elvis personally admired. He could never have imagined that this introduction would help unravel their marriage.
By then, however, their relationship had already become painfully complicated. Elvis spent much of the year performing in Las Vegas or touring, while Priscilla remained home with their daughter, Lisa Marie. Elvis had also been repeatedly unfaithful, something he later acknowledged. Priscilla knew about other women, but the emotional distance between them continued to widen.
Her karate lessons with Stone gradually developed into a relationship. When Priscilla admitted the affair in 1972, Elvis was devastated—not simply because another man was involved, but because Stone was someone he trusted and had personally brought into their lives. According to accounts later shared by Priscilla and members of Elvis’s circle, his heartbreak quickly turned into dangerous rage.
Several people close to Elvis claimed that he talked about having Stone killed. In one disturbing episode, he allegedly held a rifle inside a Las Vegas hotel suite while those around him desperately tried to calm him. The threat was never carried out, but the episode revealed just how deeply the betrayal—and the collapse of his marriage—had destabilized him.
Yet Elvis eventually admitted something remarkably honest: his desire for revenge had come from his pride and ego. He understood the contradiction. He had seen other women throughout the marriage, yet discovering Priscilla’s hidden relationship shattered him. That self-awareness did not erase his hypocrisy, nor did it repair the damage, but it exposed the vulnerable man beneath the famous image.
Their divorce was finalized on October 9, 1973. Photographs showed Elvis and Priscilla leaving the courthouse hand in hand, smiling as though their story had ended peacefully. They remained connected and shared responsibility for Lisa Marie, but behind Elvis’s public smile, his physical and emotional condition continued to deteriorate.
His prescription-drug dependency, punishing performance schedule, health problems, and inadequate medical care had begun before the divorce. It would therefore be misleading to claim that Priscilla’s affair caused his death. Still, friends and family described a man who never seemed to regain his balance after the marriage ended.
Elvis died on August 16, 1977, at only 42. Neither he nor Priscilla ever married again.
Perhaps the saddest truth is not that one person destroyed the other. It is that two people still deeply connected could hurt each other, understand their mistakes—and yet remain unable to save what they had once built together.
